To protect the labor rights of employees in Mongolia's mining sector and other industrial sectors, ensure occupational safety and hygiene, prevent industrial accidents and acute poisoning, strengthen social protection, and improve economic cooperation between the two countries, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Mongolia and the US Department of Labor have established a Memorandum of Labor Cooperation. Under the Memorandum, joint actions will be taken to improve labor safety legislation, join the International Labor Organization's Labor Inspection Conventions 81 and 129, develop standards that are essential for certain occupations in the mining, heavy industry, and industrial sectors, study international laws and regulations on the wages, pensions and social protection of workers working in abnormal labor conditions including underground, harmful and hot condition, to conduct a surveillance study of pneumoconiosis, which is prevalent in the mining industry, to reduce work disability, and improve capability of occupational physicians and inspectors of labor and social security. In recent years, production, extraction, and development have been intensively carried out in the mining sector of Mongolia, but the number of work accidents in the sector has not decreased. For example, last year, a total of 408 people were affected by work accidents and acute poisoning in the country, 103 of them were registered in the mining sector, which is 25.2 percent of the total number of accidents.
