Mongolia wants to learn from Australian experience of responsible mining. Mining sector is one of the successful cooperation that Mongolia and Australia share, as mining sector is the biggest contributor to the Mongolian GDP. The vast majority of currently active individual mining operations are in gold deposits, with copper, coal, salt and other minerals making up the remainder. Two mega-projects represent the promise of Mongolia’s mining sector: the Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold project (OT) and the Tavan Tolgoi coking coal project (TT).  One-fifth of the country is open for exploration by the end of past year and that requires responsible mining. At the meeting between Minister of Environment and Tourism Tserenbat and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Australia to Mongolia John Langtry, Mongolia’s interest to intensify the cooperation and importance of Australian experience in developing accountable mining, was discussed. The minister also expressed that Mongolia wants to develop tourism sector, learning from Australian experience and introducing practices of conserving environment of Specially Protected Areas and developing National Parks and making urban areas green in compliance with international standards. In response, Ambassador John Langtry expressed Australia’s readiness to cooperate with the Government of Mongolia.
