The Parliament’s Standing Committee on Security and Foreign Policy held its meeting on May 8th for discussing the ratification of the International Seed Treaty. The draft law on ratification of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (IT-PGRFA) of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was submitted by the Government in April. The ratification of the international seed treaty aims at guaranteeing food security through the conservation, exchange and sustainable use of the world's plant genetic resources. This treaty was adopted in 2001 and took effect in 2004, joining 144 countries currently. Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry J.Saule said that by ratifying the Treaty, we will have an access to genetic materials of 64 crops, that together account for 84 percent of the food we derive from plants. Thus, it will allow us to create a broad range of researches on breedings suitable for the country's natural and climatic conditions and to increase the food supply of the population and agricultural resources.
