Mongolia hosted successfully International Socialist Women’s conference.
Mongolia hosted successfully International Socialist Women’s conference. The Asian Regional Conference of the International Socialist Women’s organization was held in Ulaanbaatar being attended by representatives from 11 Asia-Pacific countries as well as Italy, Brazil, Columbia, Russia, Kazakhstan and India. The theme of the conference was “Asian Women and Gender Equality” - gender equality being defined as the number of women number in the country’s parliament. One of the UN Millennium Development Goals says to increase the participation of women in the national parliament by 30%. In 2015, a total of 43 countries succeeded in reaching this goal. Mongolia currently stands at number 95 on the list regarding female participation in parliament. Speakers at the conference that Mongolian women are becoming more involved, however, women’s representation in the local parliament is still low. Over the last four years, the participation of Mongolian women in the State Great Khural or Parliament has increased from 3.9%, to 14.9%, this being the result of the previous election.
