Odonchimeg 2016-05-05 12:05

Mongolian herders seriously affected by the harsh 2015/16 winter.

Mongolian herders seriously affected by the harsh 2015/16 winter. 41 percent of Mongolia’s total herder population or more than 225 thousand people have been affected by the harsh winter. Of these, 11,800 households with less than 100 animals are currently considered most vulnerable. Herders are currently suffering from a range of factors including lack of access to basic services, food insecurity, loss of livelihoods, and psychological trauma. Of almost 56 million livestock in Mongolia, some 860 thousand camels, horses, cows, sheep and goats have so far perished as a result of harsh conditions. Stressed and failed crops may further exacerbate livelihood hardship in the agricultural sector, and impact the future food basket. Mongolia has been supported by assistance from the international community and the UN Country Team in Mongolia.
