UNICEF report on air pollution impacts for children’s health is released. The report entitled “Understanding and Addressing the Impact of Air Pollution on Children’s Health in Mongolia” is published in consultation with national stakeholders. The report presents data on rising cases of the most harmful effects of air pollution, such as pneumonia, preterm birth, acute respiratory disease, and reduced fetal growth. The report noted that the short and long term effects are serious enough to require an urgent response to rising levels of air pollution. UNICEF Mongolia Representative Roberto Benes pointed out that the Government of Mongolia has increased its efforts to deal with air pollution, but that UNICEF and the government need to work together in order to protect children from harmful air pollution. Recommended key measures to reduce the harmful impact of air pollution on children include switching to clean fuels in homes and schools, increasing the coverage of vaccination and treatment in community care centers to reduce the incidence of flu and pneumonia and tackling the risk factors for air pollution-related diseases.
