Mongolia to ban coal burning. Mongolian Parliament approved a national program for fighting air-pollution. With the national air pollution fighting program the Government intends to ban completely the coal burning in ger peri urban districts in the capital city. With the implementation of the program in the period until 2021, it is expected that the source of air-pollution would be decreased by 80%, and dust and CO2 by 50%.Nowadays, 175,000 households in the ger districts burn raw coal for cooking and heating, and thus contribute to the severity of air pollution in wintertime. Ulaanbaatar’s “harmful dust” is 6-7 times higher than the most lenient World Health Organization standards. According to the recent survey, some 1800 in each 10,000 residents of Ulaanbaatar city were sick primarily due to the effects of pollution.
