Herders receive weather forecast alert on mobile phones

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mercy Corps and the chief executives of Mongolia's four mobile service providers. Under the MoU, NEMA has released a pilot-run mobile application for herders which provides the advanced weather information. As for today, herders from nearly 300 sub-provinces of 17 provinces have started receiving the direct weather forecast information on their phones. Mongolian herders occasionally face a very severe winter followed by a drought. Thus, NEMA`s approach on informing the weather forecast to herders will help alert them in advance of weather events, such as snowstorms, in order to keep them, their families and livestock safe and limit any damage.
