The ‘Mongolia Labour Forum-2018’ initiated by the International Center for Labour Solidarity (ICLS) commenced in Ulaanbaatar. ICLS has 11 member countries. This year, the forum is focusing on the countries to sharing their experiences on protection of employees’ rights in connection with the automation. Representatives of the trade unions of transport sector held discussions on reducing unemployment, restricting unemployment caused by technological development and decreasing gap between male and female employees. Over 80 representatives of railway, road and maritime transport from 11 countries including Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, New Zealand, Australia and Myanmar are participating in the forum organized by the Association of Mongolian Railway Trade Unions. Director of the Association of Mongolian Railway Trade Unions said “Unemployment increases with the development of advanced technologies. Participants from Japan and Korea noted that automation on the railways led to job cuts in their country. Introducing advanced technologies is reasonable, however, for the country like ours with small population and vast territory cutting jobs due to automation is undesirable. It will increase poverty. Therefore, we made our mission to provide the employee with the opportunity to keep and convert their jobs. The Japanese work culture demands to respect the employee. They sign the contract with employees on equal conditions and grow together. As for Mongolia, the lack of trade unions, job keeping system and wage gap are the main drawbacks.” The forum will run for two days and the outcomes will be presented to the Governments and employers of the member countries.
