The first ever data journalism hackathon ‘Hack Inequality’ was co-organized by Mongolian Center for Investigative Reporters and Deutsche Welle Academy of Germany. Out of over 100 participants presented their ideas, a total of 12 teams comprised of journalists, designers, web developers, analysts and researchers were selected at the second stage and challenged their abilities for 36 hours. SetUp team, winner of the hackathon, showed education inequality among the children with disabilities with an example of two disabled children. The video was made with sign language and English subtitle as well. The team proposes to introduce online qualification training which has been successfully running in the United States and Japan. Steppe, the second place winner team of local representatives, touched family divorce and violations of children’s rights. One in three orphan children in Mongolia loses their parent due to divorce. The issue is dependent on individual education and decision making, therefore the team considers it is possible to reduce divorce rate by improving training and promotion for people of all ages. They used animation and info-graphics to deliver their idea. As for Go Hack team, the third place winners chose inequality in access due to their location. The team aimed to prove existing inequalities in both rural area and capital city based on their collected data and statistics.
