An exhibition in Ulaanbaatar celebrates Mongolia’s first female photographer and the legacy of women who documented the country’s history through photography.

An exhibition celebrating the works of Mongolia’s first female photographer, Uliataikhuu Barbaatar, and her students opened at the General Authority for Archives in Ulaanbaatar on October 13, marking UNESCO’s World Day for Audiovisual Heritage and the 200th anniversary of the invention of photography.

Organized in collaboration with the United Association of Mongolian Photographers, the exhibition features photographs by Uliataikhuu Barbaatar and her students Nina Tsedevsuren and Tuya Sanduijav, highlighting the contributions of women to the development of photography in Mongolia.

The photographs document the country’s industrial development, social life and cultural events, preserving valuable records of past decades.

During the opening ceremony, photographer Tuya Sanduijav recalled her early career and emphasized the importance of historical photographs in helping younger generations understand Mongolia’s past.

The exhibition also highlights the role of experienced photographers in mentoring young artists and passing on their knowledge and skills.

According to the National Central Archives, its collections contain more than 100,000 photographs, alongside rare films, documentaries and newsreels dating back to 1936. These historical materials are preserved under controlled temperature and humidity conditions to safeguard the country’s audiovisual heritage for future generations.
