Odonchimeg 2016-03-31 09:03

Mongolia is to reduce persistent organic pollutants emissions.

Mongolia is to reduce persistent organic pollutants emissions. Mongolia is included in the regional project with Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and the Philippines, which is being funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and will be implemented by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). It aims to demonstrate the best available techniques and best environmental practices in open burning activities in response to the Stockholm Convention on POPs. It will run until 2020. In Mongolia, some subprojects will be implemented on improving the Law on Waste Management to strengthen the skills of personnel of relevant organizations, introduce environmentally-friendly technology for decreasing open burning of waste, and increase the public’s knowledge on impacts of POPs caused by open burning. For Mongolia’s territory is big, the country has a low population density and industry is not developed well, emission of dioxins and furans are relatively low compared to other countries. However, emission of dioxins and furans from centralized waste fields are high. Studies show that there are around 2,445 unauthorized small waste fields throughout the country. Around 1.8 million tons of wastes are generated at waste fields annually in Mongolia.
