Government seeks comprehensive solutions to reduce air pollution. Cabinet Secretariat Zandanshatar worked in several ger areas to review solutions and develop plans for short, mid and long-term to decrease air pollution in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city. Ger district is the peri-urban settlement or the settlement with no centrally connected heating and watering systems in Ulaanbaatar. Ger district is blamed to be the main source of Ulaanbaatar`s smog which exceeds the World Health Organizations standard by almost 80 times higher. About 80 percent of the city's smog comes from the chimneys burning coal and wood by peri-urban ger area residents to stay warm during winter. During his visit, the Cabinet Secretariat visited some families with the aim to seek an answer to tackle the issues of air pollution. Some good examples of avoiding to burn coal for heating was shown to the secretariat. These examples included the proper insulation of a house for decreasing heat loss, the use of electrical heaters, and locally manufactured stove “Nuudelchin or Nomad” which reduced the coal consumption by twofold. In 2017, the government of Mongolia cut the tariff of night-time electricity to zero, which leads many families to switch to the use of electrical heating systems. During his visit to ger districts, Cabinet Secretariat Mr Zandanshatar instructed officials to promptly organize a detailed research on moving ger district residents to apartments. Within this framework, the workgroup will study possibilities of putting 40 thousand apartments, currently available on the market, into economic circulation. Also, he ordered formulation of a short-term solution to minimize raw coal consumption and to prohibit the transport of raw coal to the capital.
