Mongolian hockey team becomes champion of 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation’s Challenge Cup of Asia. For the first time ever, Mongolia has won an IIHF tournament. Mongolian men’s team won a tight three-team race at the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey Challenge Cup of Asia with a 4-1 record, beating out Thailand and host Philippines. Five teams from Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Kuwait and Thailand competed in the tournament which took place in Manila, Philippines. Mongolia joined the IIHF in 1999 when it participated in the ice hockey tournament of the Asian Winter Games, and since then it brought 4 bronze medals and silver medal in past 5 years with its 8 tournaments. IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia is devoted to developing hockey in Asia and helps rank the Asian teams in view of the seeding for the Asian Winter Games.
